Rice Krispie Treats

Cereal Bar Variations & Flavor Options

Ingredients: 
3+ Tbsp butter
1 pkg (10 oz., about 40) Reg Marshmallows
     -or 4 cups Miniature Marshmallows
     -or 1 jar (7 oz.) marshmallow crème 
6 cups Rice Krispies cereal

Directions:
1. In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat. 

2. Add KELLOGG'S RICE KRISPIES cereal. Stir until well coated.

3. Using buttered spatula or wax paper evenly press mixture into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Cool. Cut into 2-inch squares. Best if served the same day.

Microwave Directions: 

In microwave-safe bowl heat butter and marshmallows on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth. Follow steps 2 and 3 above. Microwave cooking times may vary.


Special Tips or Information:
- Moist Version: Double the amount of butter to about 6 Tbsp instead of 3.
- Diet, reduced calorie or tub margarine is not recommended.
- Store no more than two days at room temperature in airtight container.
- To freeze, place in layers separated by wax paper in airtight container. Freeze for up to 6 weeks. Let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving.


- VEGAN: when using vegan marshmallows and vegan butter, you might need to add a splash of almond or other non-dairy milk to just finish the melting process and make it creamy before dding the cereal. Works great.
- Use a pizza cutter to cut your squares

Ways to spread in pan without sticking:
- Keep hands moistened with water
- Put hands in plastic sandwich bags that's been sprayed with PAM
Spread with waxed paper sprayed with nonstick spray
- Turn marshmallow bag inside out to smooth out rice krispies
- Coat your mixing bowl with PAM, butter or oil to release all the marshmallow
-  Use a buttered icing spreader to press them
-  Use parchment paper 
- Use a cold silicon spatula to press the mixture
- Wax paper doesn't work unless its coated with butter or PAM


Recipe Variations: 

Make Other Cereal Bars:

- Mix with or replace Rice Krispies with other cereals. 
- Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Crispy's, Corn Flakes, Special K, Honey Nut Cheerio's. 

Use Flavored Marshmallows:
- Colored Fruit Flavored, Peppermint, Mint Chocolate Chip, Pumpkin Spice, Cinnamon.

- Different flavors are available at different seasons throughout the year. 

- Margarita Treats: Key lime-flavored marshmallows with sea salt sprinkled on top.

Add Crumbles & Flavors:
- Add chopped up candy bars, part of it gets melted with the marshmallows and the other chunks get mixed in with the cereal. Reviewer posted he used 3 candy bars. 
- Heath Toffee Bar, Snickers, Reese's PB Cups.
- Drizzle chocolate on top.
- Dip all or just the bottom in melted chocolate or almond bark.
- Add 1/2 cup of peanut butter to the butter and marshmallow mixture.
- Add Hershey's mini chocolate chips or mini M&M Candies.
- Add Heath milk chocolate toffee bits
- Use coconut oil instead of butter. 
- Add coconut shavings and white chocolate chips

Special Idea's:
- Christmas Wreath: Corn Flakes, green food coloring, red hot candies for ornaments.
- Lillipops: Shape into "balls" and put them on a lollipop-stick.
- Decorate with cake sprinkles
